Horst Castle on Ice by theBFG
A view of the 16thcentury castle in the village of st Pieters’ Rode, near Leuven, Belgium. The tower belongs to an earlier castle and dates from the 13th century. The lower part of the tower was the only structure that survived a fire in 1489 CE. The castle was rebuilt around 1500 CE. The normal story is that castles lost their defensive power after the middle ages and were built as purely luxurious residences rather than fortresses after 1500. In this region, times were hard and the circumstances unstable. As a consequence many castles were still outfitted with defences untill well into the 17th centrury. In this case the castle keep was retained, as was the moat, while the newly built wing had gun and arrow slits rather than windows on the most vulnerable side. The castle can be visited nowadays. The stables now house a nice café. The castle itself is uninhabited and unfurnished, but the tower still features some 14th century murals while the younger parts of the castle contain some interesting 17th century stucco ceilings.

Beersel Castle by theBFG
a classic view of the old castle in beersel, belgium. a round fortress with three towers and a living quarter built up against the inside of one of the walls (unfortunately that part of the structure is left in ruins). it was built in the late middle ages to defend the city of brussles from attack from the south. It’s regarded as one of the nicest examples of late medieval castle architecture one can find in belgium.

Steen by theBFG
This is a building known as “het Steen” (the stone), in teh centre of Antwerpen, Belgium. What you see here is basically the gate of what used to be an enormous castle that was built around the start of the 13th century (eventhough there had been a fortress there much longer). The darker stones at the bottom of the structure date from this first building period. The castle originally consisted of a large ring wall and contained only a church and the house of the keeper of the castle within its walls. In 1520 the caslte was greatly altered and the house of the keeper of the castle was replaced by a large building that is now located to the left of the gate. This new house was turned into a prison building that featured cold, damp dungeons as well as luxurious appartments for more well-to-do criminals. Most of the castle and hte ancient houses that were built inside were demolished in the 19th century to make way for a new harbour that also ate up more than 8000 other houses on the river bank. What was left of the side facing the city was destroyed in the 1960’s when the ancient, unique medieval neighbourhood around the meat hall was demolished and replaced by the rather dead and cold social housing that now occupies the area. The last remnants of the castle are the gate and prison (now a nautical museum) featured in this photograph and two small fragments of wall opposite the nearby meat hall. Above the gate, one can still see a badly damaged and worn relief of a man with spread legs. This is a 2nd century depiction of the god Semini. The god originally had a huge erect penis and was seen by the inhabitants of the city as a fertility symbol and woman who wanted a child would go up to the statue and look up in the hope that Semini would help them. The statue was damaged in the 16th when prudish Jezuit priests decided to cut of his manhood.

Le Château de Modave - Belgium by Gilberte
Modave – Belgique - / The Château is situated near the village of Modave in the province of Liège Belgium. The oldest part of the building, the so called donjon, was built on a strategic rock high above the valley of the river Hoyoux. The oldest parts still visible today date probably back to the 13th-century and were erected by the Lords of Modave. In the 16th-century the chateau and the land of Modave became property of the Haultepenne and de Saint-Fontaine families. / /

Magical Touch by Glitter
I took this photo on December 26th, 2008 at the amusement park Bellewaerde (Ieper in Belgium) / We had just arrived and were looking at all the beautiful christmassy decoration thingies and then I saw this child, wanting to touch the nose of a snowdoll… found it really magical with the sun shining as she did, giving that little extra to the photomoment. / =)

About This Group
This group is a meeting place for all people with a special tie to Belgium and features all art that depicts or is inspired by Belgium.
Although it may be small, Belgium has an incredibly varied landscape, from the polders and beaches in the west, to the high hills and wild forests in the east. Also it has been a crossroads and a battlefield for countless european peoples and nations since the Roman Age and this resulted in an incredibly rich cultural heritage. No doubt this country has produced many fine artists and serves as a continued inspiration for many.
At least at the start, we will leave membership of this group open to anybody and there will be no limits on the number of works uploaded (per day or in total). However, please do your best to keep it within reason so that everyone has an equal opportunity to showcase their work.
