  • Threaded by Richard Shepherd

As you can see here, there is still a huge amount of the stock of thread left behind at this abandoned mill in Yorkshire. Someone planning a pattern would decide on the colours that they wanted to use, then send a list of the colour numbers down here to the stock room and the relevant bobbins of thread would be sent back up.

  • Opal Mine and Hoist by EarthGipsy

Best Viewed Large Lightning Ridge / Outback NSW / Australia The Ridge is world famous for beautiful black opal which is mined underground. A hole/shaft is drilled to a depth of about 25 metres before the miner commences digging a tunnel in his/her search for a fortune! Opal Dirt (mostly sandstone and clay) is taken to the surface by a hoist (shown here) or blower, it’s then dumped into the back of a truck or directly into a modified cement mixer where it is tumbled and washed for several hours. Other equipment used includes jackhammers and diggers……it’s all pretty basic! A mine claim is 50 metres x 50 metres, each miner can make a maximum of 2 claims. S/he works alone or in a small group partnership; there are no commercial companies operating at the ridge. / / Accolades / December 2008: Featured in Mills and Mines Group / December 2008: Featured in Gold Mine and Ghost Towns
