Running on Empty
The U.S.A. national average price for one gallon of gasoline is $3.61 USD, but the current price in my regional market is $3.70 USD. Long, lazy drives in the country on Sunday afternoons are now a thing of the past for most Americans.

Fantastic sky!! Love how the road leads you thru the pic. Although, the AAA prices aren’t making me feel any better. Wonderfully captured & presented, Helen!!
Irene Burdell
Helen you should complain !!Do you know what we are paying in Britain £1.10 per litre that is over £5 per gallon that is $10 per gallon approx .? we are now one of the most expensive countries in Europe and probably the world I wouldn’t wonder ,it is a disgrace the country is going down the pan rapidly. Well that’s my rant over for the day .:=))
Irene Burdell
Sorry i got so wound up I forgot to mention what a great picture it is .
Helen Bascom in reply to Irene Burdell’s comment
Damn, $10 USD per gallon. I feel ashamed for complaining now. Wow, that is incredible. I suppose no one drives in the U.K. huh?
RichardV
Lovely shot Helen. Love the sky.
As Irene has said, we pay $2 per LITRE here.

Fantastic photograph, love the way you’ve used whatever it is you use, lol, to make everything stand out like 3D, it looks so realistic I could almost step right into it and take a walk down that road! Love the earthy, sun-baked look of the land in contrast to the smoky colour/lighting of the clouds. A really beautiful shot.
Bill Fonseca
Those clouds are so dramatic, looks awesome and the overall treatment. Well done Helen.
yanmos
great capture as always!

Lindsay Knowles

Susan Grissom

MarathonMan
Love the shot, but consider yourselves lucky, here in Dublin, Ireland petrol in currently €1.21 per litre (approx $1.87) and that equates to approx $7.07 per gallon…!! AS Irene suggests earlier in this thread, it’s more expensive in the U.K. (crazy fuel taxes over there).... so get the car out and drive… while you can…!!!
:-)

wonderful work helen…...... maybe these problems will help the obesity epidemic…. gotta look for that silver lining…...................................b
Helen Bascom in reply to butchart’s comment
Ha Ha Leave it to you butchart to see the silver lining those clouds. :-)
Mick Smith
Yea Helen. You lots in the US have it way way cheap. We pay $1.50 per litre here in Oz. I think that high prices are justified. After all, its a finite resource isnt it! We should all be discouraged from over use.
Oh, and as usual, great picture Helen ;)
Mick.
helene ruiz
whoa!!! what a sky!
mychaelalchemy
it seems as though the clouds are going to come down upon the road, not like mist, but like boulders, just like gasoline prices in our highly civilized countries where half the problem is our taxes. While I wouldn’t know, but I suspect your vehicles are much more smaller and get better mileage than here in the States, while here many of us commute 30 miles or more one way to work (well, not me anymore having gotten canned).
While it is hurting the average driver it eventually has got to come around and bite the Saudis and our governments in the ass when people FINALLY just stop driving except to the local store and back. One would also think it would come back to the OIL companies, but they already have made record profits already and couldn’t care less what all this is doing to the economy as it affects absolutely EVERYTHING!!!
mychaelalchemy
MAD MAX scenario, here we come!!!!
Helen Bascom in reply to mychaelalchemy’s comment
Thank you for that insightful and well written commentary.

fantastic image!
Wendy Slee
wonderful work as yet another of your gifted “commentaries”
Taking to the road, is a rite of passage to all australians, as I am sure it is to most people around the world….. restrictions caused by high fuel costs are detrimental to our appreciation of the world and its wide open spaces….. these are indeed sad times, when we can’t just “go” for the sake of getting out there!
Kelly Bermingham
Beautiful sky !! You have created a great series of Your Town here Helen…. Stunning work..
And Petrol prices… well all the governments and oil companies are just taking the piss! While we continue to pay it as it is a necessity they will continue to hold us to ransome for it!!
Silvia Manuela
This is a great, insightful and artful series you have here, Helen.
Jamie Lee

Love the whole series – fantastic work, Helen.
I can imagine clip-clopping down the road on a horse drawn wagon like the Amish… or riding my bike. At least I wouldn’t feel like I was risking my life on such a quiet road :)
whisperingruth
Yes Helen…....you’re sending a powerful message about our economy…......it’s kind of scary…...this is certainly the kind of country road I’d love to drive along on a Sunday….............
Trace Lowe
WOW!
Moshe Cohen
Helen, it is time for clean energy.
It is in your hands. You should demand from your representatives to act.
The problem could be solved by now if not the powerful oil companies lobby.
The oil money supports regimes like Iran and terrorists like El-Kaida.
You can read my writing about Better Place project.
There is a lot of solution.
Louise Cooke
love the sense of “doom and gloom” you’ve brought to this image with your processing…suits your subject and sentiment perfectly!

You think that fuel price is expensive – but subsequently reading the comments below I see you’ve been made aware of the approximate $9 – $10 value per gallon in the UK (I believe we pay more than anywhere else in the world).
We had a news article last week that during a tankers strike, one garage was charging over $15 a gallon – stating his reason that he could supply to more customers and that it stopped people panic buying.
The rising fuel prices are crippling certain industries in our country and I wouldn’t like to be running a haulage company at the moment.
Lovely sky to the shot – beautifully processed and nice view.
matt ucar
very impressive!!!

Running on Empty happens to be one of my favorite movies. Although I’m not sure if it’s intentional, this photo reminds me of one of the last scenes in the film.
