Amber Waves

O beautiful
for spacious skies
for amber waves of grain . . . .

Two and a half million rural children, a fifth of all rural children, live in poverty, compared to 15 percent for children living in metropolitan areas. One in five rural children lived in food insecure households in 2000—food insecurity and hunger are more prevalent in rural America than in the nation as a whole.

Very moving. All I can think is “amber waves of grain” from “America The Beautiful.” It’s so lovely.

Helen, I read the commentary just now. I was one of those 20 % who grew up in rural America and often went hungry. I grew up in a very distressed area. it is worse now because the factories that once enployed people have all closed and the goods are made in China, etc. I donate to an organization that provides school supplies to the children who can’t even afford pencils and paper. I made it out of poverty but many don’t. I hope that others who escaped will help these children, also. Thank you for bringing these facts to light.
