Blood Diamonds
Blood Diamonds are gems, mined with great loss
Losing their beauty, for the deaths that they cause
A murky violent business, by the rulers of the day
Violating anyone, who dares get in their way
Dying for diamonds, a powerful message to send
Whatever you try, greed always wins in the end
With the eyes of the World upon them, maybe they may see
Its time to stop this violence and set their people free

Rany Lutz
Well displayed Helen. Diamonds have always been about the oppression or duping of people. They are a status icon with no real value. Their price is kept artificially high by a monopoly the market.
Some people bleed more than others…..
Helen Bascom
Well said Rany, thank you.
hallucingenic

Helen this is so powerful…a great image and a great message….well done…Cheers
Suzanne German
it just occured to me that there is more to this picture…I just liked the way it looked (from an artisitic point of view) although I get the meaning and I think it’s admirable!
Every time I see a particular sport clothing emblem I remember 2 year old children working as slaves in some asian country in little sweatshops – it’s atrocious!
good for you for highlighting this issue through brilliant art Helen!
Suzanne German
Helen _ I just read the link in your description….Oh how horrible! That poor boys hands got cut off!
And who knows how many others who will never be able to write let alone wear a diamond!
How distressing the truth is!
bicozikan
Wow that is amazing. I love how the facets reflect the blood. What did you use to create the faux blood? I looks almost like syrup
Zigga
Powerful message. Well done.
Dave Aarons
wow, very powerful
Greg German
Ah, diamonds. So plentiful they littered the ground like bird droppings, until the white man showed up and declared them precious. Hoarding anything makes it “rare”. We should all boycott the diamond trade and chose another natural substance to commemorate weddings, et cetera. IMHO.
An excellent and dramatic image, Helen.
James Golder
I have seen this before, though I don’t remember where….might even been here when I first got on the site. regardless of that useless info I just dribbled, this is awesome!!

You know what’s funny? I’ve never cared for diamonds!
Emeralds..yes. Rubies…yep. Diamonds…nope!
(been that way my whole life) I think the whole hooplah thing
about them, made me want to snub them years ago..I’m not sure..
but anyway..I just son’t see what all the fuss is about them. They’re transparent
rocks for crying out loud! Effective work…darn strong image!!

Real hard hitting shot, should be better featured to get the message across.
Scott Denny
Wow very moving. Great work!!!!
randmphotos
I want to say “thank you” for the image and the information. More people need to know about the diamond tragedy. It seems the more people covet and desire things (eg. diamonds, oil) the more damage we do to the most vulnerable. Sorry…getting emotional! Anyway, a favorite for me.
zandria
An extremely worthy cause…thank you for bringing it to light.

Ew gross!!! But I love the contrast between the harsh cut facets of the diamonds & the soft liquid reflections from the ‘blood’ (is it real blood?). Oh, and the message is a very important one too. Keep up the good work.
Paul Scarsella
great shot!
Magda Beda
This is amazing. It really conveys a strong meaning based on the subject!

This is a subject that I feel very strongly about and I have to say first off thank you for posting this image as well as the words accompanying it. It’s true, so many have lost their lives to obtain that stone and it’s disgusting and tragic. I’m really touched by this and I just want to say thank you again and keep it up! :]
Caroline Gorka
Powerful message Helen ….and rightly broadcast.
Lila Alias
Disturbing image… yet rightfully so. The attrocities that these “gems” cause is unbelieveable! it should be stopped now. Your social commentaries and very important… keep them up! (:

catnip addict ..., 11 days ago
the word “DI” (DIE) is in the word diamond. the sudanese have their arms chopped off if they take one to try and sell to feed their families. it’s not worth. i am so glad i’m not one of those women who “just have 2 have a diamond” my man (if i had one) could suck on a kifesaver until it fits my finger for all i care. as long as he’s there. but don’t give me diamonds or fur. fur is “FURDURE” (murdure). i’m not a furdurer. LOL!
