  • It took me awhile to find this, I’d handwritten it in a journal. The name Kuan Yin is spelled in different ways, but when spoken sounds similar in all of them. In Japan she is known as Kannon. In the ancient Sanskrit manifestation she started as a male, and transformed herself into a female. I like the concept that she manifests as both because it reminds me of the yin and yang. Kuan Yin is known for shape shifting abilities, recreating herself in forms that resonate with those who meant to encounter her. As with all bodhisattvas she may also wear the form of an animal. Look into their eyes and you’ll know. Kannon listens to and heeds the cries of the world, she is compassion and love. Here is what I wrote about her after finishing this painting: “Through mists of time and space, manifesting form to form, life after life, Kuan Yin shifts and alters herself. Fractionalizing, she appears simultaneously in far flung places, a magician slipping through disguises. Always present but not so easily recognized. Know her by her compassion. Beneath the human or animal mask is a face without flaw, smooth and unwrinkled as ivory. It is young, yet ancient. Her eyes are reminiscent of the oryx and gazelle’s soft liquid gaze, for she is luminous with trust and mercy. Kuan Yin is the cool, moist zephyr caressing scorched hearts and dehydrated lives, the shade of willow’s soft green leaves. Her love is an oasis for the bewildered and abandoned a wayside rest for weary travelers. She has many names, many faces depending upon time and place. Pause and partake of her mercy and affection. Sip slowly, deliberately. Watch for stray willow leaves adrift in the cup.” Text and image copyright Helena Nelson – Reed. Please don’t use without written permission.

  • Protecting Angel
    by Helena Nelson-Reed

    US$3.56–US$95.00

Watercolor on board Angels! Pure and perfect, the luminous intermediaries between divine and earthly dimensions; recipients of and serving divine will. The spectrum of color in her wings represents a single, concentrated beam of white light entering a prism, and emerging from the opposite side in a rainbow of cascading colors. In just this way, messenger angels receive direct transmissions of resplendent Truth, communicating this Light in myriad languages to all sentient beings. I was in a very positive mood when I painted this one, during a quiet phase when all was well in my own little world. A few months later my dad’s health began its last decline and indications signaled his remaining time was limited. I could almost see ( and certainly sensed ) his life aura fading away during this period, and with it the spirit that was him. During and after that there were some changes in my paintings that only I am privy to. Sometimes, looking back over my work, I recall what was happening in the world and my personal life during the period they were created. Colors and subject matter vary but I recognize the reoccurring patterns. Maybe this is a good reason for us to document our work, so that years later we can remember what would otherwise be forgotten. Here is the birth of a child, there the year of betrayal by a close freind. The winter of deep snow and many storms, a brillant spring, an attack on one’s country, the death of a loved one. Large and small the memories linger, rich and full. The subject matter is irrelevant because on this level the language of imagery is our individual soul -speak. Only the creatrix / creator of these works can summon up these stories from the created material, memories and the emotions they evoke, choosing to share them or not. A powerful medicine, its the artist’s right and choice whether to share this hidden medicine, and with whom…or to keep it silent. May all hearts and minds unfurl, open and prepare to receive and embrace the angel’s message. May we all allow its grace to permeate and saturate both individual and our collective being with eternal, pure light. Like a precious, faceted gem and its sparkle, may humanity become one in the intention and manifestation of unified harmony with one another, earth, and all that dwells upon her. • Grandmother Raven
    by Helena Nelson-Reed

    US$3.56–US$95.00

Watercolor on board, colored pencil. Ravens are intellegent, interesting birds with distinct personalities. Last year I taught a watercolor workshop in Yellowknife NT, 100 miles south of the arctic circle, a place that must be the raven capital of the world. Many women I met there also like them and had stories illustrating just how special these corvids are. Raven flies through the spiritual traditions and myths of Celtic and First Nations peoples. Sometimes with positive associations, other times not, depending on the culture telling the story. This painting was created a few years ago and the exerpt is taken from the portion of my notes describing the way I personally relate to ravens. My father died a few months ago, prior to that he was cared for by my mother and myself, with home health (hospice) nurses coming by every three days. Watching a loved one slowly depart mind and body over a course of days, weeks, months and even years is something many women (and men) are doing these days. Our children grow up, but within a few years we begin caring for aging parents. This painting celebrates not only raven and the waning moon, crone phase of life but the way observing the decline and death of loved ones can sober a person. We look death straight in the eye, realizing that the empty darkness within the skull’s socket is our fate as well. This realization, once it hits you in the gut, is strangely liberating and can shed new light and perspective. Sometimes, at the end of those long days taking care of dad and witnessing all that transired, I’d stand outside in the Texas night. I’d breath in the cool, cedar scented air, gaze up at the moon and try to process it all, just like the woman in this painting. “From birth, when we enter the world of light, until death, when we journey outward through the center of the Big Dipper and onward to the land beyond the pines, women own the power to perpetuate tradition and culture. Worldwide, regardless of patriarchal society’s efforts to negate, steal, and belittle this truth, woman is the cohesive balance within the family. Our caring hands deliver new life, and often escort life out of this world as well, when we care for and accompany our dying relatives to the very end. Our love and actions weave the strands of life within family and community into a cohesive net. When society convinces us otherwise, or prevents women from doing so, the net frays and unravels. The burdens are often heavy, yet women endeavor to perpetuate their powerful role within family and community. All women are sacred, carrying within the promise of future generations. Nothing and nobody can take this away. “ Text and image copyright Helena Nelson -Reed. Please do not use without written permission.
