Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado…..and how I love shooting up there when the winter weather begins to roll on in…the wind is bad, the air—-freezing cold, but the images that one can capture are filled with atmosphere and drama, case in point, this shot here. Autumn Travels Shot in Alluvial Fan area of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado What a scene that just glowed…and I mean GLOWED. It made your jaw just drop open. I am fortunate in that no one else was there, and was lucky to be able to take about 100 shots of this scene alone, playing with composition and such, and custom white balance settings, and in this one, something similar to a sunset setting was used. The Aspen Stand This shot got some really good feedback over on FredMiranda.com so I thought that I would go ahead and share it with you all here as well. Photographed in Rocky Mountain National Park, this is the type of Fall Aspen shot I have wanted, but for some reason, whenever I have shot these kinds of shots in the past, they just never really have come out. Well, I think it did this time. It is almost to much of an iconic Colorado in Autumn photo, but I think one thing makes this one stand out from others. The lines. If you notice the black areas of the bark on the Aspen, that is actually where the Elk have eaten away at the bark. However, I like how it creates the line from left to right, going up higher as it goes to the right. I didn’t even notice this until I was processing the shot, and I suppose you can blame that on negative space. I suppose you can say that I am happy with the shot, I finally got the Autumn image I have always wanted. For those of you who don’t know how beautiful the Colorado Aspen’s are in Autumn, just ask Judy, she will be glad to tell ya! Let me know what ya think! / —-John

A Stormy Autumn Colorado’s Longs Peak shrouded in Autumn thunderstorm clouds, stands towering above the quaking Aspen below. This scene was really something to see….the atmosphere was just to die for. The way the contrast played out with the yellow and gold Aspens against that dark sky was astonishing, the light was really changing fast so I had to be fairly quick while shooting this. I may seem small compared to the rest of my world,I’m not.I stand alone and guard these fields every day and night. I’ve weathered many a storm and drifts of snow. Those that call my field home, rest in my shade on a hot summer day. The birds of the air, make homes amongst my limbs. I’ve stood bare on a cold winter’s night, and felt the scorching summer sun. I give you beautiful shades of green in spring, and am aflame with color in the fall. I’ve watched people struggle to make ends meet, and enjoy lunch in my shade. I am the Guardian and I endure on. As you pass me by, draw on my strength so that you to can endure Image taken in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountain NP, this would be my favorite tree in the Cove.

Took this shot while snowshoeing around our area here in Whistler (BC) off the valley trail which offers great views. Seem to fit nicely for a B&W moment. / Cheers

Newfound Gap Road is the portion of US 441 that runs through the Great Smoky Mountain NP. Going between Gatlinburg in Tennessee and Cherokee in NC. It is named for the gap going across the mountain that was found around the late 1800’s. Since it was new they called it New Gap, it had also been called Right Hand Gap….They are 2 tunnels and a 360 degree loop along the road. It mostly follows the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River on the Tn side. They are many pull offs with spectacular views. Hiking trails and fishing offer a more outdoor experience along the way. The Appalachian Trail cross it around Newfound Gap….This view here is just across the mountain from Newfound Gap. It is from the Ocanaluftee Valley Overlook…..They are also picnic areas on either side of the mountain, and historic building on the NC side. The reason you are not charged for visiting the Smokies is because of this road. It was a main road between Tennessee and North Carolina at one time. Part of acquiring the land for the park rested on there not being a charge to cross between the states.
